Music, Arts, PE, and Health (MAPEH) Periodic Practice Test

The correct answer highlights the significant impact of African culture on the development of various dance forms in Latin America, particularly the Afro-Cuban rumba and Brazilian samba. These dance styles emerged from the blending of African rhythms, movements, and traditions with local indigenous and European influences.

The Afro-Cuban rumba evolved from African musical and dance traditions brought to Cuba by enslaved Africans. It is characterized by its vibrant rhythms, complex percussion, and improvisation, making it a direct reflection of African cultural heritage. Similarly, Brazilian samba has roots in African communal dance traditions that were adapted and transformed in Brazil, featuring lively beats and a strong connection to Brazilian festivals and celebrations.

In contrast, the other answer choices point to dance forms that primarily have European origins. The waltz and foxtrot, as well as disco and swing, do not originate from African cultural influences and are not representative of the African cultural legacy found in Latin American dance. Therefore, the profound connections between the African diaspora and the evolution of Afro-Cuban rumba and Brazilian samba illustrate the essential role that African culture played in shaping these significant Latin American dance forms.
